An interesting international conservation and research initiative:
The European golden jackal (Canis aureus moreoticus) in North-Eastern Italy and Western Slovenia
"Golden jackal is rapidly expanding its European geographic range. The species at present dwells in most of Central and Southern Europe, to the West reaching Western Switzerland, to the North Germany, Latvia, Estonia, to the East Ukraine, Moldova and Bielorussia. Nevertheless, poor and uncertain data are known for various distributive gaps located between these neo-colonized areas. Both Italian and Slovenian reproductive groups are probably sources for golden jackal expansion toward Central and Western Alps, but the information on their situation are scarce and fragmented, in spite of the long-lasting presence of the golden jackal in these areas. For this reason, an Italian team composed by Stefano Pecorella, Luca Lapini (GOJAGE), Andrea Caboni and Marco Pavanello (Therion Research Group), together with the Slovenian colleagues Miha Krofel and Tomaz Berce (Lubljana University), are now investigating the presence of the European golden jackal (Canis aureus moreoticus) in some areas from North-Eastern Italy and Western Slovenia by means of playback method, to outline an updated picture on number and distribution of jackals groups in the Italian-Slovenian border area.
This will be quite important to better understand the dynamics of expansion of the golden jackal in Western Europe, at present still poorly known."
Thanks Stefano Pecorella for your contribution!
